2022 Tech Innovations: Surprising Breakthroughs Revealed

A year post-COVID was nothing short of a miracle for humans that survived, and the tech world is running the show like never before!   

From witnessing some sophisticated innovations to seeing the world return to normalcy, we will stick to the former and waltz down in 2022 to see the best technological advancements.

Here's a glimpse of the 2022 tech rundown that we are elaborating on in this article:

January: The James Webb Space Telescope   

2022 will go down in the history books as one of the most accomplished years across all of NASA's missions. - NASA Administrator Bill Nelson

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is a space telescope that NASA has developed in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA).  

It is the successor to the Hubble Space Telescope and is designed to be more powerful and capable of studying distant objects in greater detail.   

JWST has significantly advanced our understanding of the universe. It has studied a wide range of astronomical phenomena, including the formation of galaxies, the birth of stars and planets, and the search for signs of life in the universe.

According to the latest update that arrived on January 16th 2023, by NASA, JWST confirmed its first Exoplanet. It is a planet that orbits another star using James Webb Space Telescope!  

February: DotPad  

DotPad is a portable braille display and note-taking device developed by Dot Inc., which creates assistive technology for people with visual impairments. It is a small, lightweight device with a refreshable braille display that connects to a smartphone or computer and allows users to read and write text in braille.   

The DotPad is compatible with various devices and operating systems, including iPhones and iPads. It is designed to be a convenient and portable alternative to traditional braille displays, which are often more extensive and expensive.  

As of January 16th 2023, DotPad is announced as a winner in the innovation category by CES 2023!

March: AI-Driven Vehicle Inspections  

AI-driven vehicle inspections use artificial intelligence technology to perform vehicle inspections.  

It can be done by using specialized cameras and sensors to gather data about the vehicle's condition and then using machine learning algorithms to analyze the data and identify any problems or issues.  

AI-driven vehicle inspections can be faster, more accurate, and more consistent than human inspections. They can identify many problems, including engine, transmission, suspension, tires, and other components.

April: DALL-E 2  

DALL-E 2 is an artificial intelligence system that can generate images based on a given text description. It was developed by OpenAI and is an extension of the original DALL-E system, which was released in 2021.    

DALL-E 2 is based on a transformer neural network and can generate many images, including objects, people, animals, and landscapes. It can generate highly detailed and realistic images and even create images of objects and scenes that do not exist in the real world.    

DALL-E 2 has the potential to be used in a variety of applications, including graphic design, advertising, and visual arts.

May: Production of Breakthrough Silicon Li-ion Battery Begins  

The innovation says silicon has the potential to improve Li-ion batteries in several ways. One of the main benefits of silicon in Li-ion batteries is that it can increase capacity.   

Silicon has a higher charge capacity than the carbon materials typically used in Li-ion batteries, which means it can store more energy within the same volume.  

In September 2022, GDI also raised a whopping US$ 13.3 million to produce these silicon Li-ion batteries to attain higher energy and faster charging.  

June: 3D Image Sensor for Automotive  

In June 2022, Infineon launched the world's first ISO26262-compliant high-resolution 3D image sensor for the automotive industry.  

A 3D image sensor is a device that captures a three-dimensional image of a scene. For example, in the automotive industry, 3D image sensors are used to create a detailed representation of the environment around the vehicle.  

It can be used for various purposes, such as collision avoidance, autonomous driving, and driver assistance.  

3D image sensors work by using multiple cameras or sensors to capture images from different angles and then using algorithms to stitch the images together and create a 3D scene model.  

Some common technologies used in 3D image sensors for automotive applications include stereovision, structured light, and time-of-flight (TOF) sensors.  

July: Meta - Make A Video

2021 is the year Facebook rebranded itself as 'Meta', opened a new door to innovation, and brought metaverse possibilities to life for people.  

'One of its kind' innovation by 'one of a kind' company. Meta AI claims to generate videos from mere texts using an AI system.

August: GitHub Copilot  

AI-assisted coding platforms are the future for programming.

Well, the future is here! GitHub introduced and availed GitHub Copilot - An AI programmer to all developers.  

It is an editor extension for programming that suggests the following line of code, complete methods, unit tests, boilerplate code, and algorithms too!  

They announced the availability of Copilot as a plugin in March 2022 for Visual Studio IDE (Integrated Development Environment) only; later, their libraries support many such IDEs.

November: Nanoparticles Fighting Cancer  

In 2021, Suneet Dua, chief revenue and growth officer of products and tech at PwC, predicted that 2022 would show unprecedented growth and continued expansion for healthcare technology. Looks like he was right!  

Nanoparticles are microscopic particles that measure between 1 and 100 nanometers in size. These particles have unique physical and chemical properties that make them useful for various applications, including cancer treatment.   

One way nanoparticles can be used in cancer treatment is through targeted drug delivery. For example, nanoparticles can be designed to carry drugs directly to cancer cells, reducing the toxicity of the treatment and increasing its effectiveness.   

Another way nanoparticles are used in cancer treatment is through photothermal therapy, where a specific type of light activates the nanoparticles to generate heat and kill cancer cells.  

While we see great efforts in tech healthcare, cancer is still a disease that people think can't be cured. So, let's see how groundbreaking nanoparticle technology can be!  

December: ChatGPT  

ChatGPT is a chatbot model developed by OpenAI that uses the GPT-3 language model to generate responses to user input.   

It is designed to be able to converse with users naturally and engagingly. As a result, it can be used in various applications such as customer service chatbots, virtual assistants, and online tutors.   

ChatGPT is trained on a large dataset of real-world conversations and can generate appropriate, relevant, and engaging responses. 

It is one of the best inventions for the Marcom fraternity, who can think of ideas on their feet but struggle to put them into words!
